The rapid economic development in China has attracted people all over the world,and also given rise to the boom of the industry of liaison interpreting. It cannot beignored that liaison interpreters plays an important role in promoting exchangesbetween Chinese and foreign culture.The inspiration of this report comes from the author’s personal interpretingpractice for several foreign contributors’ participating and touring in Guangzhou.After provided language service for Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew, Minister of Education ofSelangor, Dato’ Haji. Mohamad Roslan Bin Sakiman, Mayor of Petaling Jaya and theMalaysian delegation, the author performs self-assessment and client evaluation,concludes interpreting strategies and quality of conduct used in the process. Throughanalysis the author detects that there are various obstacles in the interpreting,including accent, terminology, interpreting techniques and interpreter’s faithfulness etc.On different occasions, liaison interpreters need to use diverse strategies to facilitatecross-cultural communication and deal with the on-site problems, such as creatingtopics to break the ice, partiality etc. Besides, the author points out the underlyingreasons behind these interpreting strategies and gives some relevant advices.Liaison interpreters have unique advantages in language ability, cross-culturalflexibility, political sensitivity and familiarity with clients etc. The author hopes thatthe liaison interpreting practice from the report can give guidance to teaching andtraining of liaison interpreting, and provide reference values for the study of theoriesand skills of liaison interpreting. The report also offers inspiration and interpretingstrategies for future liaison interpreters to better tackle the challenges in theirinterpreting tasks and provide a better service for foreign contributors to enjoy thetour and learn more about China.
