With the development of globalization, more and more tourists from the western countries are coming to China, hoping to approach China’s unique culture in a closer way. The rapid growth of tourism industry in China creates the need for guide interpreting to facilitate tourist-host interaction. Guide interpreting shares a lot of features with other interpreting forms, but it has its unique characteristics. Guide interpreting is always known as a method to spread tourism culture. However, due to a lot factors, guide interpreters face great challenges. Interpreting errors seems difficult to avoid.In fact, it is inevitable even for the well-qualified and seasoned guide interpreter to make mistakes. As a different interpreting style, the guide interpreter plays a duel role of "guide" and "interpreter" which demands proficient bilingual language skills, especially the knowledge about culture as well as good interpreting skills. This thesis studies the errors of guide interpreting from the perspective of the Theory of Sense which proposes the three steps of interpreting, namely, comprehension, deverbalization and re-expression. If the guide interpreter made mistakes in any steps, he or she would fail to achieve a successful communication. After studying the author’s recordings, this thesis summarizes the interpreting errors circumstances of guide interpreting, combining the interpreting process, especially based on the Theory of Sense, analyzes the reasons of interpreting errors and proposes coping strategies. This thesis mainly consists of six parts, introduction, four chapters in between and conclusion. Chapter one mainly introduces the development of Chinese tourism industry and the features of guide interpreting. In Chapter Two, the methodological foundation of this paper-The Theory of Sense is introduced, which serves as the theoretical framework to the research. Chapter Three is the core of this paper which talks about the reasons of interpreting errors in guide interpreting. Chapter Four is also the core of this paper which proposes the coping strategies. The last comes to the conclusion of the whole thesis that reviews what have been studied and presents some suggestions for further studies on this subject.
