Guide interpreting, a typical cross-cultural communicative activity, is characterized bytourist-oriented, informative, culture-loaded words and expressions. Due to culturaldifferences between China and the West, interpreters may encounter difficulties in the processof interpreting practice. This report focuses on analyzing difficulties the author encounteredduring her guide interpretation on Mount Tai scenic spot and proposing tactics for overcomingthese difficulties in light of Skopos Theory.This task is to interpret the attractions’ introductions from Chinese to English as well ason-site socializing conversations both from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese.Taking this guide interpreting task of Mount Tai as a case study, this report reviews brieflyabout guide interpreting, elaborates task background, task requirement and tourist information,presents pre-interpretation preparation including theoretical preparation and practicepreparation. By analyzing on-site interpreting process and tourists’ feedback, this reportanalyzes the difficulties encountered in this case such as interpretation of traditional cultureand poetic expressions with Chinese characteristics, interpretation without note-taking, lack ofbackground knowledge introduction by Chinese tour guide and so on. On the basis of SkoposTheory, tactics such as cultural amplification, omission and generalization are adopted.This report summarizes the author’s benefits and lessons of the task. By presenting theauthor’s experience and proposed tactics, this report is anticipated to provide references forother interpreters as well as for the study of theories and tactics of guide interpreting.
