On Functional Equivalence Interpreting

With the rapid development of our country, it becomes an irreversible trend for news to globalize. Government gradually realizes the power of journalistic and pays more attention to the press conference which is the window to the world for releasing news, giving detail explanation to the News and building reputations of the government. A high level of interpretation is required when emergency happen. The interpretations of Emergency Press Conference are the channel built between the government and foreign media.The paper chooses Emergency Press Conference as a case to study the interpretations and analyze with the direction of Functional Equivalence. Firstly, the author introduces the Functional Equivalence theory generally and makes a review of the scholars’ research on the theory in China and abroad and previous study on press conference interpretation with functional equivalence. Then the author enlightened the other’s research on the theory and makes her own research. In addition, the author gives an introduction to Functional Equivalence theory systematically from the aspects of its framework, its four requirements and its three steps to reproduce the source culture and eliminate the cultural differences. The author analyzes the feasibility of functional equivalence in interpreting Emergency Press Conference. What’s more, the author presents practical interpretation of emergency press conference in light of functional equivalence in terms of lexical level, syntactic level and textual level.In conclusion, the author not only introduces functional equivalence and some rules that have proved feasible application in the interpretations of emergency press conference, but also gives the interpreters some advice in practical interpretations.
