Teaching Chinese as a foreign language in China has been developing fordecades. It has made great achievements not only in theory but also inpractice. Time adverb, as one of the important members in adverb family inmodern Chinese language, has been catching extensive attention fromscholars. Chinese adverb as a special part of speech both has thecharacteristic of localization and ticks together and has the characteristic ofPosition Nimble. The teaching of Chinese time adverbs plays an important rolein Chinese teaching to the foreigners. In general, the Chinese time adverbseem not difficult to learn, yet the foreigner always make mistakes. Inaccordance with the inter-language theory, this paper discusses, by themethods of linguistic contractible analysis and error analysis, internationalstudents’ error categories in using common adverbs in the Chineseinter-language system and the causes of such errors. The paper study atcommonly adverb of time in modern Chinese, based on previous researchresults as well as my ten months’ teaching experience in Thailand. Four errorscategories have been found and defined as missing, mis-adding, and misuseof adverbs from the perspectives of grammar and pragmatic. A questionnairesurvey has been conducted to make quantitative analysis of Thailand students’difficulties, methods and self-assessments in learning Chinese adverbs. Finally,The influence of the teacher-student relationship and the social pragmaticenvironment and the negative effect of mistakes and errors in classroominstruction and textbook compotation on Thailand students’ learning Chineseadverbs are also discussed. Based on these discussions, some comments aremade on improving the teaching of adverbs in Chinese as a foreign languagecourses.
