This is an English-Chinese translation report for Experiencing Intercultural Communication: An Introduction, coauthored by Judith N. Martin and Thomas K. Nakayama. The book was published by McGraw Hill Higher Education in2005as an intercultural communication textbook for college students. The translation report will deal with the translation of Chapter9.The whole translation task was done by five team members, directed by my supervisor, Professor Zheng. The book can enhance Chinese students’cross-cultural awareness, help them learn more intercultural communication techniques, and improve their international view, so this translation task is important and worthwhile.As a category of non-literary translation, the textbook translation has some common characteristics of applied translation. The language should be formal, objective and academic. The theory utilized in the process of translation is Functional Equivalence, which is proposed by the American translation theorist Eugene A. Nina, who emphasizes "the closest natural equivalent of the source language message". It has provided efficient theoretical guidance towards the applied translation.Based on the Functional Equivalence theory, the translation report discusses the translation difficulties and problems during the translation process, analyzes them and proposes some solutions. The author has divided all the difficulties and problems into three categories, namely, language, style and cultural concept. The whole report has five parts. Chapter One gives an overall introduction of the translation task; Chapter Two describes the process of the whole translation; Chapter Three gives a detailed explanation to the Functional Equivalence theory, and analyzes the application of the theory in the translation; Chapter Four classifies and discusses the translation difficulties and problems by using some examples; and Chapter Five makes a summary of the translation report and the translation process, including the lessons and reflections after the translation.
