As a combination of literature and science, one distinctive feature of popular sciencewriting is to disseminate and popularize scientific knowledge and technology in plain, vivid andclear language. Thus popular science translation can borrow the methods of technical translationand literary translation in order to ensure the accuracy of science and the popularity and interest.This translation report is extracted from Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler’s Abundance: TheFuture Is Better Than You Think(Chapter One). This book belongs to popular science textsaiming to popularize science and technology.On the whole, the source text is scientific, literary,popular and interesting. Specifically, there are many technical terms, nominalized structures,passive structures and long sentences in it. In the process of translation, under the functionalequivalence theory, the author combines technical translation with literary translation methods inview of these characteristics. So the translation can reflect scientific rigor and may be loved bythe masses. At the same time, the author details the whole translation process and finishes thisreport.This report is divided into four parts: The first part is task description generalizing thesource and content of translation text; The second part describes detailed translation process,consisting of preparation, translation and proofreading; The third part is the key point, throughinstance, discussing characteristics of the source text, analyzing the differences between theoriginal text and the target text based on the functional equivalence theory and summarizingtranslation principles and techniques; The fourth part is the reflection on translation, includingsuggestions on translators in this field.
