Because of the limitation of time, it is hard to interpret all the sentences andphrases. The interpreter should boldly adopt the brevity tactic and make whatinterprets accord with the custom and aesthetic of native speakers. For English only,there have always been scholars doing a great deal of research works of the brevitytactic on English for common and specific purposes. The researches before arediscussion about brevity tactic on English for common and specific purposes frommacro perspectives. Few of them studied about the influence of brevity tactic oninterpreting, especially for Chinese-English interpreting.The essay is an empirical study on the brevity tactic in Chinese-Englishinterpretation. The author selects the Chinese-English interpreting material of2012Premier Wen’s Press Conference as the experimental material and10second-yearMTI interpreting students are picked as the experimental subject. By means ofinterpreting test, questionnaire and open-end interview, the study aims to know theinfluence of the brevity tactic on the Chinese-English interpreting performance ofthe students. Some other influencing factors are also discussed in the essa y. Thepurpose of the study is to provide powerful guidance for students interpreters toenhance their ability of using the brevity tactic.The study turns out there exist a positive correlation between the flexible use ofthe brevity tactic and the quality of interpreting. A good mastery of the brevity tacticcan make the interpreting of Chinese which contains a lot of abbreviations quicker,smoother and more accurate. What’s more, the language skills, psychologicalcondition and some other factors of the student interpreters will also affect theirabilities in dealing with the brevity tactic. On the whole, based on the influencingfactors, MTI student interpreters should adopt relative strategies, improve theirability to adopt the brevity tactic so as to improve the comprehensive competence ofinterpreting.
