Since the Chinese economic reform, different social sectors are witnessing rapid development and change. In recent years, following the integration of China to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the2008Beijing Olympics, China has experienced uninterrupted development on the way of becoming a World Power. These fast social changes are also progressively changing the language Chinese people use. Modern Chinese is very contemporary and in constant regeneration, with the emergence of tons of new words every year, some of which are widely adopted by a large number of speakers, to the point of drawing attention and creating controversies. All of these neologisms also reflect the contemporary social life and the change of mentality of the public.In order to facilitate the ingestion of studied information and to better understand China’s modern development by Chinese learners (for example while watching TV, reading news stories or when translating), targeting the teaching of neologisms is critically important. For Chinese as a second language, through the acquisition and cognition of modern Chinese neologisms, foreign students are able to deeply understand modern Chinese word-building and combination rules, as well as conduct daily life conversations, reading and writing with more flexibility. Therefore, research on collection and selection methods of new words as well as teaching strategies should be conducted in a systematic way, carrying out systemic research and analysis.The main purpose of this study is the analysis, through theoretical research on neologisms and their practical use, the establishment of a neologism library of new words from2007to2012, of inner and outer phenomena embodied by these words, such as background of creation word types, and word-building etc., to further use the analysis as bedding for the teaching section. Subsequently, the present study aims at finding the impressions of learners of Chinese as a second language and their opinions as well as the current situation of in class teaching through questionnaire survey, providing detailed and trustworthy data, based on which we raise constructive opinions regarding the improvement of teaching modules of neologisms. The current thesis hopes to provide references for research on Chinese neologisms, through the establishment of a neologism library, and also through the preliminary formulation of ranges of new words, analysis of classification and content and methods while teaching neologisms, making such teaching more pragmatic and efficient.The present study is mainly made of four parts.Chapter1is the introduction. It explains the choice of the subject and provides a summary of research related to Chinese neologisms. It also indicates the focus points of the study, the difficulties encountered and the methodologyChapter2briefly defines neologisms; it also describes the difficulties faced when creating the words library and the selection of the neologisms to include. Last, it analyzes word-building methods as well as the research category.Chapter3is the description and analysis of the survey’s situation. The author conducted a somewhat comprehensive survey around the topic "The current situation of learning of Chinese neologisms and tendencies of foreign learners in China", and obtained results confirming the need for setting up new classes dedicated to the teaching of neologisms.Chapter4integrates the results obtained in Chapter3in order to make the teaching of neologisms have a clearer finality, efficiency and pragmatism. The author presents preliminary teaching formulations as well as a simple study plan in the context of teaching neologisms within teaching Chinese as a second language.The author, through the introduction of this paper, hopes to bring about enlightenment and thinking about the teaching of foreign students in China. By creating a library of Chinese as a second language neologism library, analyzing neologisms range and classification, we hope to provide references for Chinese neologisms teaching plans and future research.
