Nowadays, the importance of literature is inevitably diminished and dwarfed by theoverpowering influx of electronic media. Literature peripherization, namely, the ecologicalcrisis confronting literature, has drawn mounting attention and concern from the academiccircles, triggering rigorous academic debates and serious scientific research. By means ofquantitative analysis of data from surveys and qualitative analysis of various arguments, thisthesis makes a study of the status quo of literature and the impacts of the new media, puttingliterature into the whole media ecosystem, aiming to sustain the ecological balance betweennew media and literature. Framed by the theory of media ecology, this thesis also endeavorsto underscore the enhancing effects of new media, tracking down the plight of literature toboth social and spiritual factors. Finally, suggestions are made and countermeasuresproposed to decelerate literature peripherization, for the ecological wellbeing and organicpreservation of literature. In the course of the above study, some additional findings aresecured in relation to the effective reading and teaching of literature and the scientific andrational utilization of electronic media.
