Report Of Conference Interpreting Field Work

Ever since the establishment of Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI), translation and interpreting practices have become a crucial part for MTI students. As a postgraduate majoring in interpreting, the author has practiced in accordance with the guidelines of MTI education and fulfilled the required interpreting field work during the past three years.The report elaborates on typical conference interpreting field tasks the author has participated in during her postgraduate study. Conference interpreting is mainly divided into two categories:consecutive and simultaneous. The author chooses typical interpreting field jobs to make analysis:she takes the2nd CTPC Cup All China Interpreting Contest as a case for consecutive and Asia-Pacific Low-carbon Economy Conference for simultaneous. With interpreting theories home and abroad as guidance, the author conducts case studies with the aid of live recordings, notes, power-points and transcripts.This report is composed of the introduction part, three chapters and the conclusion part.The introduction part presents the background information of this report as well as interpreting field tasks to be focused on in the following chapters. Chapter1introduces the basic concepts of conference interpreting and its two types. Then the author states the background, preparation, requirements of delegates, processes, evaluation of audiences/delegates of the field tasks she has participated in.In Chapter2, the author employs the interpretive theory, the Effort Models and other principles and rules in interpreting processes to analyze and summarize specific examples in these cases in a profound way. Examples that have not met up with expected effects are dissected in combination with on-the-spot circumstances.Chapter3puts forward methodologies and suggestions for conference interpreting processes, including "deverbalization", attention splitting, note-taking skills in consecutive interpreting, extra-linguistic acquisition and so on, which the author hopes will serve as a modest help to those interested in consecutive interpreting in general and in becoming professional interpreters.The conclusion part plays a role of summarization by stating professional qualities and techniques of conference interpreters, the deficiencies of the paper and the enlightenments for future interpreting studies.
