The difference of thinking habits brings about the difference between the English language and the Chinese language. As two different kinds of languages, English and Chinese are heterogeneous in terms of sentence structures. With more nested structures and complex sentences, the English sentence is of a hypotactic nature and longer in total length. With more linear structures and clauses, the Chinese sentence is of a paratactic nature and its total length is relatively shorter. Long and complex English sentences, just as the name implies, are long sentences with complicated structures. The most typical features of this kind of sentences are the comprehensive use of different subordinate clauses and the flexible use of all kinds of prepositional phrases and participle phrases, which lead to complex sentence structures and varied constituent relationships, and bring great difficulties to English-Chinese translation practice. These syntactical differences lead to difficulties in the translation of English long sentences. And the author of this thesis has gained a deeper understanding about it when translating Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Old News. This paper will use the author’s own translation practice to explore and study the translation of long and complex English sentences. The whole study aims at seeking translation skills of long and complex English sentences, providing scientific and effective translation methods referable to translators. This paper, through the examples in the translation practice of Old News, compares the syntactic structural difference between English and Chinese and analyzes the methods in translating English long sentences into Chinese. The analysis of sentence structure and its modifiers will contribute to the understanding of the source language which is the prerequisite to translate long sentences from English to Chinese. The second step is to adopt a variety of translations methods and skills such as following the original syntactic order, reversing the syntactic order, splitting sentence and refraining sentence, to render a faithful and expressive translation.
