Translation Of Long Sentences Based On Syntactic Contrast Between English And Chinese

This paper is a translation report based on the contrastive analysis of long sentences between Chinese and English. The source text is taken from Trademarks Act of Ireland(1963). It is because of the preciseness of legal documents that many long English sentences appear in the text, which is one of the most distinguishable characteristics of legal texts. During the translation, we will meet a lot of long English sentences, which cause a great deal of difficulties in translation. Accuracy is the key factor to evaluating the success of translation. The translation of long sentences is the most difficult job among all translation works, especially in legal texts.Although the structure of long sentences in legal text is complex, there are still some rules to be found. In this report, based on the syntactic contrast between Chinese and English, some strategies in translating long sentences of legal texts have been analyzed through citing typical examples in the Trademarks Act of Ireland(1963), namely literal translation, adverse translation, divide translation and synthesis translation. Last but not least, conclusion in respect of this translation will be drawn, through which can provide reference and guidance for future translation of legal contexts, especially for the translation of Trademarks Act.
