As the differences of thinking modes between the Chinese and the English people, and social and cultural differences between China and Britain, there exist great differences in English and Chinese syntactic structures. Therefore, further discussions and researches on applying appropriate translation strategies to translate long English sentences in academic papers idiomatically and faithfully are needed.Taking Society-Water-Technology(excerpts)as the translation practice material, the present author analyses the characteristics of typical long sentences in the source text based on a contrast of English and Chinese syntactic structures.Proceeding from such three aspects as hypotaxis and parataxis, complexity and simplicity, substitution and repetition, the present author explores the application of three specific translation strategies, including division, transformation and amplification.Hence, with the aid of those translation strategies about long sentences in academic papers, the present author intends to convey the information and content of academic papers faithfully and smoothly for a better understanding of target text readers.
