This report is an conclusion on the project of simulated Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation of Report on the Work of the Government (2013) from the perspective of Verschueren’s Theory of Adaptation, of which the target is to improve the author’s theoretical knowledge and practical skills of interpretation..Report on the Work of the Government poses many challenges to interpreters. Polysemy appears widely in this report, which calls for interpreters’correct understanding. Many culturally-loaded expressions are not easy to interpret within the limited time. Besides, the typical Chinese noun parallel phrases affects interpreters’ understanding of the sentence structure and the density in meaning adds to the difficulty of simultaneous interpreting. Clusters of null-subject sentences demand constant addition of subjects during interpreting. This report adopts Verschueren’s Theory of Adaptation to tackle these difficulties. This theory holds that while using the language, the speaker has to continuously make linguistic choices. Thus, this theory provides some help to interpreting. In the dimension of "structure" in the Theory of Adaptation, this project explores the simultaneous interpretation methods for polysemy, cultural words at the lexical level and parallel structures at the syntactic level. This project finds that correct understanding of words, compressing context, superordinates, chunking, passive voice, amplification of subject and nominalization of the VO structure can all help to address the afore-mentioned difficulties to ensure an accurate simultaneous interpretation.
