The Translation Practice Report Of The 2015 Report On The Work Of The Government Under The Guidance Of The Adaptation Theory

The translation of the source text of this report can be defined as non-literary translation since the material is from the 2015 Report on the Work of the Government delivered by premier Li Keqiang. A host of Chinese and foreign scholars have proposed a number of translation theories which were used in our real practice. It has to be pointed out that the Adaptation Theory originated from the Theory of Evolution and was later brought into linguistics by Jef Verschueren, the secretary-general of International Pragmatics Association. After that, the theory was introduced and applied in English and Chinese translation by numerous experts and professors. When translating the source text, the author of this report leaned heavily towards applying this theory as the guidance of his translation after delving into it from four perspectives, contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability,and the salience of the adaptation process.In this report, the author adopts quantitative analysis. As a result, he accumulated considerable typical examples at the very beginning, drew some tables and then revealed the rules underlying the figures. In addition, the author chooses to analyze the source text from two aspects, lexicon and syntax, which represented micro and macro-level analysis. Needless to say, the source text boasts a large volume of prominent characteristics in both lexicon and syntax, such as economics terminology,words or phrases with Chinese characteristics, proper nouns and acronyms,run-on sentences, active sentences, sentences without subjects, sentences with few connectives. And lastly, the author of this report bears in mind that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Consequently, the author collected 39 prominent examples and then demonstrated the application of the Adaptation Theory.Through thorough and meticulous research, the author found that the Adaptation Theory could be applied in non-literary translation and guide us to conduct scientific study. Moreover, the author becomes aware that the audiences' response towards the translation is the golden rule of judging the quality of a translation version, which is in conformity to the requirement of taking audiences' opinions into consideration. And then, when we are dealing with a huge project, it is clever enough to dissect it intoseveral small chunks. So, from this point of view, micro and macro research seem to be more essential in dividing and analyzing the whole project.As far as the application of various theories from other subjects is concerned, we are safely enough to make some bold attempts in scientific research and this report is a case in point. So long as we open our minds, more opportunities will be grasped by us without concerted efforts.
