Interpretation Project Report On A Simulated C-E Simultaneous Interpretation Of Report On The Work Of The Government (2015): Interpreting Methods For The Words With Chinese Characteristics

Before writing this report, I practiced a simulated C-E simultaneous interpretation for the 2015 Report on the Work of the Government, which was delivered by the Premier of the State Council--Li Keqiang at the Third Session of the 12th National People's Congress on March 5th,2015. The listeners are two of my classmates.Report on the Work of the Government belongs to the political discourse. The content includes the review of last year or the past five years, the overall plan for the following year or the next five years, which relates to politics, economy, people's life, etc. During the simulated simultaneous interpretation, I find that there are some difficulties in interpreting words with Chinese characteristics, especially words with numbers, four-character expressions and words with cultural connotation.This report is guided with the Interpretive Theory, and its representatives are Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer, who focus on de-verbalization, and the equivalence of the meaning in the interpretation. Under the guidance of Interpretative Theory, some useful methods of interpretations are discussed so as to solve the problems in my practice. They are amplification, omission and linear methods. Also, the author takes the official version released by Xinhua News Agency as a reference so as to get the appropriate interpretation.Guided by Interpretive Theory, the interpreter has consciously practiced simulated interpretations several times, and expressed that the methods above are meaningful in improving the quality of the interpretation. The author expects this report can provide some suggestions and more examples to further political text interpretation study.
