China’s further opening to the outside world and increasing exchange with other counties in politics, economics and culture require more and more legal documents to be translated. However, the linguistic and stylistic features of legal documents present challenges to translators, suggesting that translators should be well qualified so that their translations are accurate, clear and logic, the ST messages are effectively transmitted and the behavior of manufacturers, commodity distributors and consumers is properly directed. This thesis is the present author’s summary of and reflection on her translating of Codex Alimentarius:Prevention and Reduction of Food and Feed Contamination, and shows the important role of acquisition of legal knowledge, transformation of thinking mode from English to Chinese, application of translation theory, accumulation of common sense, and use of modern translation tools in legal document translation with examples. The author believes legal knowledge acquisition is more significant for a legal document translator.
