Style Transference—A Comparative Study Of Two Chinese Versions Of Sense And Sensibility

Style transference is a topic which draws close attention from researchers in the translation field. Researchers hold various views in regard to this topic, and the concept of style has been still in dispute. The view that "style is the man" has received a universal agreement among many researchers, and this thesis also considers that style is a symbol of the writer of the original work. While from the readers’ point of view, style had better be specified as a symbol of the work, which refers to the general features expressed by the work. Therefore, translators should try their best to transfer the style of the original work to the target readers.This thesis mainly conducts a comparative study of two Chinese versions of Sense and Sensibility from the perspective of style transference. It tentatively combines Chinese relevant translation theories with Nida’s dynamic equivalence theory and Newmark’s "correlative translation", which will be applied in the case study. In the thesis, the author not only compares the original work with the translated work, but also compares style transference of the translated works from the lexical level, the textual level and the rhetorical level respectively. In addition, the thesis concludes that faithfulness to the original work in style transference is the inheritance of fruits of Chinese traditional translation studies, which is the essential requirement of translation as well. Response from the target readers can be a useful supplement to the traditional way of measuring both translation and its criticism.
