With the continuous improvement of China’s international status, China’sforeign external contact become more frequent, diplomatic interpreting becomingmore and more valued. There are differences between countries in culturalbackgrounds, social customs, value concepts and thinking patterns. It is a challengefor the ability of an interpreter. Diplomatic interpreting can only be done when theinterpreters get and develop their diplomatic consciousness in their daily trainings.The predominant and difficult point in diplomatic interpreting is the translation ofwords and sentences with Chinese characteristics. This kind of interpreting ischallenging because those words and phrases represent the characteristics of socialismwith Chinese characteristics in political, economic, cultural, military and other fields.The characteristics of diplomatic interpreting are political and sensitive. Based onthese features, under the guidance of Functions Skopos Theory, this paper studies thewords and phrases with Chinese characters. The paper is divided into four chapters,the third chapter is the important one, and the main discussion is about application ofSkopos Theory in diplomatic interpreting, and interpreting strategies in diplomaticvocabulary with Chinese characteristics. The proposed five strategies can be appliedduring the process of translation: literal interpreting, addition, adjustment of words,liberal translation, and conversed expression.
