Hard news generally refers to the up-to-the-minute news and events that are reported immediately, while soft news is background information or human-interest stories. With the development of news, soft news is also becoming increasingly important. Therefore, the translation of soft news should get more attention. A good translation of soft news should not only transfer the content completely and precisely to the target readers, but also reflect the style characteristics of the soft news.The material applied in this report is a selection from What’s the Next Craze by the Program Group of CCTV "China Business News". Specifically, it includes the preface and the former part of Chapter â… . This piece of material belongs to soft news which is rich in information and humorous in style. Therefore, the translation should not only transfer its content completely and precisely, but also keep the original style of the text. The writer of this report has encountered various difficulties during the translating process. As far as lexicons are concerned, the writer finds the following three types of lexicons are difficult to handle: financial words, idioms and technical terms of tea. These lexicons are either too professional or contain too much cultural information or have hardly been translated before. The writer completed the translation after a lot of searching, thinking and revising. In this report, the writer summarizes the translation strategies of each type of lexicons by analyzing some instances so as to provide references for others. |
