| This report, as an interdisciplinary study of journalism, linguistics and translatology, centers on C-E translation of soft TV news. The stylistic differences between soft TV news and other texts or newspaper English determine that the translation project has special requirements and surely difficulties will occur in the process. Soft news refers to those of human touch and may easily fuel the audience’s interest. The stylistic features of the texts translated are mainly illustrated in lexical, grammatical, and structural aspects, such as the use of midget words, clipped words, loan words, socialization of new scientific terminologies, employment of simple sentence structure and flexible use of tenses. As for the structure, soft TV news is composed of soundbite and interview, and in the TV program, there will also be an on-camera reporter. All these factors shall be taken into account to produce good rendition.The discrepancies between Chinese and English make the translation of news headline and cultural words difficult to cope with in the project. Accordingly, the author hereby put forward feasible theoretical solutions to the major and difficult issues encountered from the perspective of both translation and journalism. For instance, transediting and selective translation approaches can be applied for information selection and rewriting of the news texts, and by communicative perspective, information communication should be considered as the translation criteria, and the communicative approach by Peter Newmark can be used to address the cultural words occurred. Though the author has made every effort to modify the report, there might still exist any shortcomings. The author hopes it will serve as reference for news translators and news translation practice with its pertinence and systematic research. |
