This is a translation report on The Longest Whale Song, which is an English children’s novel written by a famous English writer Jacqueline Wilson. Its Chinese version is planned to be published in2014by China Children Press and Publication Group (CCPPG). The selected source text contains two parts of the novel including the Chapter12and the Chapter13, which tell a story about the growing experiences and psychological changes of a girl named Ella, whose mother is in a coma caused by parturition.Children’s literature is different from other literary works both in its language and the description of mentality. Compared with the language of literary works for adults, that of children’s literature is briefer and more vivid, besides its content is full of passion. The characteristics of Child readers are unique as well, such as their comprehension and the horizon of expectations. The translation is under the guidance of Reception Aesthetics theory and Subjectivity of Translator principle. The translation work, in which the writer applies some translation methods including literal translation, liberal translation and conversion to solve the difficulties during the translation practice, analyses the source language and its context in order to satisfy the children’s needs. The translation report consists of four parts, including the background of translation project, the brief introduction of the work and the study of translation practice such as the analysis and strategies, and some enlightenments and problems which are still unsolved. Finally, it is better that the conclusion of the report may give a reference to future translation study of children’s literature, whereas the unsolved problems caused by the immature translation skills of the translator should be improved in the near future.
