Genetically Modified (GM) technology transfers genes from some species into a target species by means of molecular biology, imparting new characteristics to the species. As a high-tech achievement with infinite vitality, GM technology possesses great potential in ensuring stable and high crop yields and has concerned governments and people around the world due to the matter of safety. The book Genetically Modified Crops is written by Nigel G Halford from Rothamsted Research, a British agriculture research institute. It introduces GM technology from the elementary to the profound, contributing to a better understanding of GM crops. This translation project aims to translate Chapter One and Chapter Three of the book. Chapter One provides us with the basic concepts and background knowledge, leading us into the world of GM technology, while Chapter Three introduces the application and prospect of this technology, which is closely related to our daily life.Genetically Modified Crops is a well-structured book with precise expressions, involving plenty of technical terms, sentences in passive voice and clauses of various types, which manifests the scientificity, accuracy and objectivity of scientific texts. This constitutes quite a few difficulties for the translator. Therefore, the translator translates the selected chapters with the help of some translation techniques and gives an analysis of it from lexicogrammatical, syntactic and textual aspects respectively. The translator makes use of translation techniques such as addition, deletion and conversion to deal with words, while division, combination, conversion between actives and passives and changes of word order are used for sentence translation in accordance with the characteristics of scientific texts. With respect to textual translation, the translator tries to represent the thematic progression of the original texts and some changes are made to cohesive devices when necessary to get a smooth translation.
