The scope adverb is a large category in modern Chinese. The current studies on them involve many different aspects. This paper takes a pair of synonymous adverbs,"dan" and "dandan" as research objects. This paper tries to analyze the differences between them basing on semantic, syntactic and pragmatic aspects; the reasons of their differences and the motivations of their long-term coexistence. Based on the corpus of the Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU, this paper reveals their semantic, syntactic and pragmatic differences from synchronic view, and their origin, coexistence and development from diachronic view. This paper can be divided into seven parts, they are:Chapter one, introduction:This part makes a summary on research object, context and purpose, and also reviews the recent study situation on related topics. And last, it also introduces the study methods and the origin of example sentences.Chapter two to Chapter four, synchronic study:Based on semantic, syntactic and pragmatic aspects, this paper describes the similarities and differences of "dan " and "dandan".Chapter five, diachronic study:In this part, this paper reveals origin, coexistence and development of "dan " and "dandan". And also try to explore the origin of "dandan" from rhyme scheme, bisyllablization and pragmatics aspect.Chapter six, motivation analysis:Based on subjectivity and subjectivisation, this part tries to analyze the reasons causing these above differences.Chapter seven, conclusion:Give a summary and point out the limitation of this research and some parts which need further study.
