Josef Lhévinne (1874-1944),is a famous Russian pianist and educator who livesin the half of the twentieth century.As one of the major representatives of traditional Russian piano school ofthought. he is not only a virtuoso piano master, but also one of the important pianoteachers of the history.he inherited the basis of the Russian school of thought of pianoplaying and teaching ideas,and developed a unique set of piano teaching principles,Lhevinne trained a large number of outstanding talents for the Juilliard and MoscowConservatory of music, which made a great contribution for the inheritance anddevelopment of the Russian piano education. His book 《Basic Principles inPianoforte Playing》makes a conclusion of the piano playing skills and teaching ideaswhich has an important guiding significance in the world.This paper is divided into three parts. Firstly, attempts to Lhevinne’s life andartistic career as a starting point. In the second part,we can focus on the analysis fromthe importance of primary education, a good basis for music, the arts of touchingkeys and learning methods through the summarize of the piano performance andteaching ideas from Lhevinne..In The last part we can explore the significant impactin piano performance and piano education in China from Russian piano school ofthought.Through this study,we can give a comprehensive understanding and evaluationto Lhévinne,and we can also see the enormous contribution about piano performanceand teaching theory which Lhévinne brings to us.
