Since the founding of new China, the Chinese government has always attached great importance to popular science.English for popular science(EPS),as an important component of popular science, has aroused wide concern of academia not only because of the unique role it plays in exchange and cooperation at home and abroad but because of the important role it plays in scientific propaganda. In view of the great significance of EPS,more and more people from translation circle, including the author of this report, are paying considerable attention to the translation of it in a bid to propagate the information it contains.Causality in English for popular science is an important issue, the translation methods for which need to be explored.Under the framework of the Skopos theory, this thesis focuses on how to translate the causality in English for popular science. And for that purpose,Chapter Two Energy:Warming the Earth and the Atmosphere from a popular science book Meteorology Today is selected as the source text, which mainly introduces the formation and influence of energy, temperature and heat through the analysis of scientific data and the description of relevant phenomena. This original text uses lots of causality sentences to describe the relevant scientific information more accurately. To fulfill the translation task, the translator, first strives to master the knowledge of natural science in the source text, then with the help of the theory aforementioned tries to find the appropriate translation strategies,of which each conforms to the major principles of Skopos theory. This report is made up of six chapters:the first chapter gives an introduction to the research background, the significance of the study and the layout of this thesis. The second chapter briefly describes the significance and requirements of the task.Chapter Three introduces the pre-task work,while-task work and post-task work.Chapter Four summarizes the theoretical framework of Skopos theory. The fifth chapter is a case study and applies Skopos theory to translation practice. The causality in the text is analyzed by means of conversion, synchronizing and amplification.Chapter Six summarizes the findings and implications of this report.
