| The present thesis first briefly introduces subtitle translation and multimodaldiscourse analysis theory. Secondly, contents and characteristics of the subtitles of theCCTV documentary The Art of Dunhuang (Episode1&2) are discussed in detail. Thirdly,the thesis sums up the specific translating difficulties, including the translation of historicaland cultural contents as well as the limitations of subtitle translation. Finally, based on thetheoretical framework for multimodal discourse analysis, the thesis attempts to arrive atcorresponding translating strategies from three levels of multimodal discourse system (thelevel of context of culture, the semantic level and the formal level). Literal translation,liberal translation, annotation, simplification and rewriting are used when it comes to thetranslation of culture-loaded words and expressions. The application of hypotaxis-parataxisconversion, subject changing, conversion of abstract and concrete words, and conversionof dynamic and static expression can be seen when dealing with sentence structures.Besides, condensation, ellipsis, supplementation, sentence rearrangement and deletion areapplied to make subtitles briefer and more effective. All in all, the translation of thesubtitles should be accurate and concise to meet the needs of foreign audience, making itconvenient for them to enjoy the historical documentary. |
