Research On The Development Of The Voluntourism Normalization

As a new travel activity, voluntourism attracts tourists who are interested in bothpublic good and tourism to spontaneously organize or participate in such program inan attempt to promote the development of tourist destination.“Visiting as doingpublic welfare” is a commonly used slogan for voluntourism. Being engaged involuntourism can not only meets each individual’s aspiration of high-quality life orgreat passion for public good, but also enhances one’s social responsibility.Furthermore, it can create a win-win situation for tourists and the destination byhelping tourist destination develop in a healthier way with positive effect botheconomically and socially.Based on the relevant theory of psychology, experience economy, non-profitorganizations and stakeholders, the paper is mainly to analyze the reason for the risingof voluntourism, the different types and features as well as the positive effectvoluntoursim, philanthropy, tourists and destination by discussing how to enrichvoluntourism connotation, elevate the awareness of public good and improve charitymode innovation. The growing of voluntoursim requires unique public value andappropriate resources to ensure its core competitiveness in order to develop in asustainable way. This paper introduces some best practice of voluntoursim in foreigncountries, from which the characteristics and problems of programs designed by different host are also summarized. From a perspective of voluntoursim normalization,this paper put an emphasis on each link of voluntourism and put forward suggestionsaccordingly, including formulating regulations and laws, attaching due care toindustry self-discipline and information disclosure, and being in social oversight.Ultimately, this paper is aimed to provide some idea for the normative development ofvoluntoursim.
