AIM This study aimed to investigate the relationship between MUC1, MUC2and the development of gastric cancer including Helicobacter pylori (HP)infection through analyzing the expression of MUC1and MUC2in gastric mucosa of non-atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer.METHODS Thirty patients with non-atrophic gastritis, thirty patients with intestinal metaplasia and forty-eight patients with gastric cancer at Qingdao Municipal Hospital from November2011to April2012were enrolled in this study. The expression of MUC1and MUC2in gastric mucosa was determined by immunohistochemistry staining.RESULTS (1) The expression of MUC1in gastric mucosa of non-atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer showed a decreasing trend, the difference was not statistically significant. MUC2was not expressed in non-atrophic gastritis mucosa, expressed only in gastric intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer, the difference was statistically significant.(2) Compared with HP negative gastric mucosa the expression rate of MUCl and MUC2in HP positive gastric mucosa was lower, the difference was not statistically significant.CONCLUSION Our research revealed that from non-atrophic gastritis to gastric cancer, the expression of MUC1was down-regulated, however the expression of MUC2was only positive in gastric intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer, this phenomenon may be more closely related with occurrence of gastric cancer. HP infection may be associated with decreased positive expression rate of MUC1and MUC2. The correlation between MUC1, MUC2and HP infection needs to be further discussed.
