The Late Qing Wu Yu Poetry Study

Wuyu is a famous ideologist,poet,ci writer in late Qing dynasty and the early republican china.As "an old hero whom shake off the fetters of the old conception by himself",he write many articles to talk about anti-Confucianism,education,politics and woman’s rights,he also formed systematic standpoint of poem and ci.He has many works,all his works include not only poems and essays but also ci and antithetical couplets. He also take poetry responsory with academic distinguished personages at that time. Wuyu’s creation and literary thought are influential in the academic world. However, among the results of his research the scholar mainly concentrated on his literature reviewing,life and ideology, and all these need to complement.Also, scholars haven’t pay attention to his literary works such as poem,ci and antithetical couplets. In consideration of the fact that the study about Wuyu’s ideology and literary achievements isn’t sufficient,this paper will supplement and correct his life story, revisited his ideas,and investigate his literary creation in the first time, perhaps it is helpful to remedy the gap in the study of Wuyu.This article is divided into six chapters.The first chapter is used to tested Wuyu’s ancestry,year of birth,circle of acquaintances and scholarly works complemently,this chapter tested and complement Wu’s ancestry once again,especially his wife,concubine,son and daughter, confirm the year of his birth,reveal the effect of his social activities have put on his literary creation, also review his writing comprehensively. The second and third chapter explain Wu’s ideas such as anti-Confucianism,education,politics and woman’s rights,besides,it also discuss his view of literature such as the idea of write poem,choose poem and write ci. The fourth and fifth chapter study Wu’s poem and ci,his six hundred poems not only have rich content, but also have outstanding artistic achievement.his poems are mainly formed in sequence, crowded with literary allusions, the language is primitive and gorgeous,plain and simple,the style of his poem is characteristic as grief and indignation,also fresh and natual. Wu have nineteen pieces of ci,its content mainly involve in love, in the meanwhile,his ci relate to painting, composing verse, offering birthday congratulations and baring his soul as well,the style of his ci is romantic,the language of his ci is both flowery and unsophisticated. His poems and ci all has important value epistemically and academically.The sixth chapter study Wu’s antithetical couplets.His fifty antithetical couplets could be classificated as three kinds:description,congratulation and mourning. His antithetical couplets made outstanding achievements in expressive art,the style is depressed mainly,accompanied by bright;the language is various,either natural or elaborated,all could be fixed with the antithetical couplet itself well. At the end of this paper, Wuyu’s simple chronicle and the compilation of his works is attached.
