Wang Xiaobo is a typical writer who gains fame only after his death. Independent from his contemporaries, Wang is unrestrained in thinking and writing, and what sets him apart is the western cultural resource. Wang is always straight in admitting his inheritance from western thinkers and writers, which provides much evidence for the existence of the instructional relationship between the western culture and him. His thought mainly derives from the liberalism under empirical ration and the power theory of Foucault which is embodied in his works as the conflict of abusers and the abused. By sexually presenting love and hatred, Wang tries to figure out the truth behind the seeming game and reflects people’s living state during modernization. Besides, George Orwell’s dystopia novels inspired Wang Xiaobo to compose some works criticizing totalitarianism. As for the novel techniques, Wang has an apparent postmodernist style acquired from European novelists, especially the French nouveau roman writers. Therefore, his narration is carefully orchestrated with remarkable beats and rhythm. The American black humor also affects his writing, but the influence is not so concrete. Nonetheless, Wang’s employment of black humor do contribute to the ironic writing of contemporary China. It’s undeniable that as a Chinese novelist, Wang can not live and write in a Chinese culture vacuum, but it’s also clear that what eventually distinguishes him apart is the western cultural resource.
