Wang Xiaobo’s novel creation has a distinct sense of space, and this article combines a series of spatial theories on the basis of close reading, examines the spatiality in Wang Xiaobo’s novel, and excavates the connotation of its spatial narrative.Spatial narrative research is divided into two categories, one is the narrative space related to content, mainly focusing on the physical space of text, that is,the space of "things";The second is the spatial narrative related to the form, which mainly focuses on the spatial narrative technique and structure, that is,the space of "narrative".This paper "surveys" and "draws" the spatiality in Wang Xiaobo’s novels at these two levels. The first chapter explores narrative space and its reflection on the living conditions of people, focusing on three aspects: urban space, individual space, and public space. The writing of urban space contains Wang Xiaobo’s thinking on the other shore, from the "Ocean Country" in his early works to the strange and absurd ancient city, the other shore in Wang Xiaobo’s mind is gradually suspended and deconstructed, and faces dissolution at the moment of stepping in,reflecting his transformation of utopia from desire to doubt and rejection, and in the eternal dilemma,Wang Xiaobo achieves the transcendence of the other shore with art and beauty. The individual space flashes the spiritual attributes of the subject, and in Wang Xiaobo’s novel, the protagonist’s individual space presents a high and low height change. The basement constitutes a spatial metaphor for the "silent majority",and at the same time it is also a marginal, aphasia position; In contrast,Wang Xiaobo also depicts a series of individual spaces with "high" characteristics, which is not only the transmission of "light" aesthetics, but also a high degree of publicity of the free spirit. The park is a public space that Wang Xiaobo often appears,in which some marginalized groups are roamed, such as homosexuals, anonymous writers, etc.,showing the characteristics of public spaces that appear to be free and open, but are actually under the gaze of power. The second chapter explores spatial narrative and its pursuit of the poetics of the novel, focusing on the four aspects of work naming, character intertextuality, nested structure, and fractal narrative.Wang Xiaobo’s novel collections "Golden Age","Bronze Age","Silver Age" and the posthumous manuscript "Black Iron Age" are named after the "Metal Age",drawing on the five ages of mankind told by the ancient Greek poet Hesiod, with different textures or styles, like sculptures of different textures, forming an artistic juxtaposition relationship and creating a macroscopic sense of space.Wang Xiaobo’s novels are rich in intertextuality, and the characters of different texts are intertwined in the reproduction, forming a huge text network, creating a rich sense of space and layering, and leading to the mapping and proliferation of meaning space in mutual dialogue.Wang Xiaobo is good at breaking through the barriers of different space-time dimensions in the novel, forming a nested structure of multi-time and spacetime contrasting with each other, giving the novel a sense of hierarchy and space in the synchronicity, and this nested structure realizes "communication" in the writing behavior of the external narrator and the counterpoint melody of different time and space inside.Wang Xiaobo also adopts a fractal narrative full of uncertainty, breaking the linear law of cause and effect, exploring infinite possibilities, and in the process of rewriting, the plot evolves into a tree-like structure with branches and leaves, with a complex sense of space. The third chapter focuses on the connotation of Wang Xiaobo’s novel space writing. With his brilliant imagination,he constructs one "heterotopia" after another with tension and connotation, which can be roughly summarized as cities, residences and prisons, and this illusory, alternative mirror space triggers our thinking about real space.Behind Wang Xiaobo’s spatial writing lies the anxiety about space, which is a kind of mental anxiety in a closed, authoritarian, and inhumane living space.Looking back on his writing process, spatial anxiety from the beginning forced the protagonist to fly away,to the final imprisonment of the protagonist into a cage, reflecting the change in the focus of Wang Xiaobo’s description of the relationship between man and space, behind which also presents a rough trajectory of spatial writing: utopia-heterotopia-dystopia.Finally,Wang Xiaobo’s spatial writing is essentially the unity of spatial field and spiritual values, which is embodied in the isomorphism of spatial confrontation and spiritual confrontation in the dualistic context on the one hand, and in the reflection of free spirit and open space on the other hand.
