"Er" as a conjunction in Chinese is mainly used to connect two items. However, in modern Chinese,"er" in "X-er" conjunctions and "Er-X" conjunctions are not for connection. Instead, it only constitutes one component of two-syllable words and its relationship with "X" is inconsistent with the modern Chinese word formation grammar.
