Whiteware was evolved from greenware. It developed rapidly in Sui and Tang dynasties, and "greenware in the sourth and whiteware in the north" came into being. Guanzhong region is the political, economic and cultural center of the Sui and Tang dynasties. With lots of varieties and fine quailty, whitewares excavated represent the highest technology of whiteware at that time and were widely used in the society.On the basis of previous research, this article tries to collect information and data of white porcelain unearthed from tombs and ruins in Sui and Tang dynasties in Guanzhong region, then proceeds a typological and staging study, and summarizes the characteristics and after that analyzes the development and characteristics of white porcelain this period. Afterwards, I do analyzing studies of the whiteware’ use in Sui-Tang dynasty, of some special categories, in order to explore the issues related to trade flows and the residents’social life in Sui and Tang dynasties.This article includes three chapters. The first Chapter is divided into three sections. It mainly introduces the selected topic aims and meanings in the first section. The second setion tries to define the concepts of spatio-temporal, white porcelain and individual concept that easily cause confusion. There are introductions for archaeological finds of hite porcelain unearthed from tombs and ruins in Guanzhong region during Sui and Tang dynasties and some reviews and conclusion about research history in the third section.The second chapter is to research the white porcelain unearthed with the typology method of archaeology, primarily analyzing artifacts which have clear development routine, for example bowls, pots, tuohu, plate, and water jar, and brief introduction of ones which are small in number, including porcelain pillow, porcelain shell, lids. On this basis of the research, staging on the unearthed white porcelain is divided into five phases and summarized features in every period.The third chapter is about discussion on the relevant issues of pottery excavated, which are divided into four sections. The first section discusses the usage of white porcelain in the Sui and Tang dynasties in Guanzhong area. Combined with various artifacts unearthed in kilns, the second section analyzes the kilns where white porcelain are produced. The chief kilns are Xing Yao, Ding Yao, Huangpu Yao, Gongyi Yao. The third Section analyses two more special classes, one for double glazed porcelain represented by porcelain which is white inside black outside, the other for the white porcelain which has literal sign. The fourth section summarizes identification features of white porcelain unearthed from the Guanzhong region in the Sui and Tang dynasties.
