Biennale is commonly used within the art world to describe large‐scale international contemporary art exhibitions; it’s also an important window to show the artistic achievement of all over the world. With the continuous development of contemporary art nowadays, it shoulders the responsibility of cultural exchange, public education, and international communication. From the perspective of an art management student, it is also very important to study the practice and organization of biennales. However, problems come along with the rapid increase of biennales. Take the Venice Biennale as an example, the artworks are mostly controlled by dealers while the national pavilions cannot easily escape from political influences or the pursuit of ideology. How should we balance the cultural policy with independent academic opinions? How should we convert biennales from “elite salons” into public festivals? How should we achieve the win‐win solution with economic benefits accompanied with public education, etc., these are the questions at hand that we have to face to.For this reason, on the basis of extensive case studies, supportive interviews and first‐hand information, this thesis will study the18th Biennale of Sydney from four aspects including its relationship with the government, its sponsorship model, the curatorial method and selecting mechanism as well as supportive projects. The18th Biennale of Sydney focuses on the art and artists, and takes the responsibility to drive the art scene to public through education and sound services, it provides an elementary reference to the professional study of the management of biennales.
