Dean C. Hammer, who is John W. Wetzel Professor of Classics and Professor of Government of Franklin and Marshall College. This paper mainly introduces and discusses Hammer’s book, The Iliad as Politics:The Performance of Political Thought, which had been published by University of Oklahoma press in2002. It was the first one to try to regard Homer as a political thinker, or to say, comprehend the Iliad as a political thought work.In the chapter one, I analyze those difficulties in philosophy and classics hammer was facing. In the chapter two, I tease how hammer responds to those difficulties, and by comparing with Hanna Arendt’ political thought, I investigate his viewpoint:politics as activity. In the chapter three, I show hammer’s political interpretation of the Iliad. In the conclusion, I will comment hammer’s work and his comprehending of politics.
