This paper makes a comparative study of examples and exercises’ design in high schoolmathematics textbooks between China PEP-A and Japan MRP, there are three issues to beconsidered. First, what’s designing characteristics of examples and exercises between Chinese andJapanese mathematics textbooks? Second, what’s the similarities and diversity of designingexamples and exercises in two versions mathematics textbooks? Thirdly, discuss the principles ofdesigning examples and exercises in mathematics textbooks. The concrete findings are as follows:First, the examples and exercises of PEP-A textbooks show the characteristics like choosinglife-orientation problem source material, designing the examples and exercises of application, setting up examples and exercises in different degree of difficulty, solving the problems flexiblyand so on. The examples and exercises of MRP textbooks show the characteristics like designingthe questions with pertinence, emphasizing the fundamentality and refinement of the questions.Second, the similarities of PEP-A and MRP are providing the same percent examples andexercises and knowledge point, paying more attention to fundamentality to examples and exercises, choosing simpler problem source material, setting up question in different degree.1. Arranging examples and exercises in different ways is the first diversity of two editions.PEP-A adopt chunking form-first group of examples, then group of exercises and MRP adoptalternative form-one example one exercise.2. There are indication tags like “instance”,” example”,” applying example” to show thedifferent function, neither does PEP-A.3. PEP-A provides more forms apart from question and answer of treatment method, such asadding step-by-step instruction, summaries and so on.4. They have different quantities exercises and composite difficulty. Comparing with MRP’straditional question style, PEP-A gets more abundant ones. 5. They have different relation degree of examples and exercises. PEP-A have gets thehigher relation degree than MRP in configuration of examples and exercises.Third, Combining the principles of compiling examples and exercises in related literatures, the author analyzed the features, similarities and diversity of PEP-A and MRP, then put forwardsome reference supplement: When we draw up the examples and exercises,1. We should integrate fundamentality and development, purposefulness and pertinence;permeate applicability and life-orientation, attaching importance to variation and divergence;2. Think about unifying integrity and refinement, hierarchy and fundamentality, flexibility andoperability, humanity and scientific.
