Known as the "Everest Plan","Top-notch Students to Develop Basic Science Pilot Program" was jointly issued by the Ministry of Education, the CPC Central Committee Organization Department and the Ministry of Finance in2009. It is an exploratory experiment of China’s top innovative talent training mechanism which aims to making them part of basic research activities and a future academic leader in the discipline. Selected universities relying on their own traditions and advantageous disciplines have undertaken many corresponding reforms and innovations. According to the relevant literature and website information about Shanghai Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University and Fudan University, this study analyzed and compared the implementing status of the four from the following three aspects-setting mode, student selection and cultivation.The purpose of this research is to explore the implementing status of top-notch students to develop basic science pilot program in Shanghai Jiaotong University and Nanjing University from the study experience of the students. The researcher conducted a questionnaire survey model and interviewed several students of the two universities during the autumn semester of the academic year2011-2012. The survey covers the following aspects:"selected method","target selection trend","academic development","capacity development" and " academic stress situation".Study finds that the majority of students have no clear development goals for their future; it is quite different in the students selected way, respondents from Zhiyuan College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University mostly selected by the shunt, while respondents from Nanjing University by recommended and independent recruited; the students mainly take self-study, small seminars and classes these three ways in their study; for their self evaluation in ability developing,there are no clear differences between the two universities except critical thinking ability and network skill; curriculum, oneself and examination are three major pressure sources.Based on the results of the analysis, the study suggests the universities should pay more attention to students’ interest and potential during students selecting process, strengthen the connection with high school stage; The curriculum should adapt to the needs of the development of top students in scientific research flexibly; the universities should improve the training system to reduce the students’ worries of their later development, and perfect the allocation of teachers and implement the Tutorial System.
