University course examination evaluation system (UCEES) plays an important partin higher education. It has the function of guiding student’s study. Meanwhile, teachersare able to get feedback on the students learning results. An appropriate examinationevaluation system has a positive effect on both of learning and teaching, and vice versa.As one kind of basic way to assess the students study abilities, UCEES necessity andimportance are beyond doubt in higher education. In addition, UCEES featured incultivating students’ creativity has been developing in national universities currently.Based on this, many domestic scholars and some researches from the aspect ofexamination system, examination management, relevant theory and practice and so onput forward some useful suggestions. However, there is no overview and comprehensivegeneration about university course examination evaluation system. This paper furnishedan overview on university course examination evaluation for readers and showed theadvantages and disadvantages of the researches for following researchers to reference.This paper took23kinds of core educational journals as the blueprint andsummarized the research methods and research contents of university course e xaminationevaluation system in China in recent two decades. The researches were classified intoempirical researches and non-empirical researches in terms of research methods andseven kinds of researches in terms of research contents.The result showed that on the one hand, in terms of research methods, the collectedarticles of recent two decades are mainly non-empirical, with the percentage of71.03%.Most researchers relied on the relevant research theories, by virtue of their own specificpersonal experience and teaching practices to express their personal viewpoint and idea.In the limited empirical researches which took up just28.93%, scholars and researchersmainly adopted the research method of quantitative research of which most were experimental study and questionnaire survey. In addition, there were few articles thatadopted the research method of the combination of quantitative research and qualitativeresearch, which was in accordance with the tendency of educational research and shouldbe promoted. However, the lack of qualitative researches was also a problem.On the other hand, in terms of research contents, the researchers expanded theirresearch from the following seven aspects:(1) problems and countermeasures onuniversity course examination system(including exam contents, exam methods, exampurpose, questions types, exam functions, exam management, grading system);(2)research on some specific course;(3) a certain specific examination model;(4) relevanttheories on examination;(5) the research on exam cheating;(6) the research on examevaluation system;(7) research on the relationship between course examination andexam evaluation. We can find that the researches were not so deep and many researcheshad the same or similar contents and results. In addition, there were some other problemslike vaguely used definitions and connotation of some terms, and the lack of relevantcomprehensive theory.The conclusion of the present study was that researchers ought to adopt scientificresearch methods and take more profound consideration and research so as to makecontributions to the optimization of university course examination evaluation system andthe cultivation of more talented graduates.
