Research Private Teachers Career Development

From1949to the late20th century, private teachers1have been of great importance sincethey have made significant contributions to the implementation of compulsory education in ruralareas. Thereafter, private teachers are gradually phasing out of the history. However, it is notcommon to have documents recording this group, or any descriptions regards with their personalcareer and development. The review of their experience can be good references to theprofessional development of today’s teachers. Consequently, this study attempts to explore thespecial experience and the career development of the private teachers, leaving some records forthis retreating group.There are several factors affecting the career development of the private teachers except thesocial environment and the policy: their professional life, everyday experience, and of course,their own concept of career development. Therefore, this research tries to study the careerdevelopment course of private teachers with the method of life history. Two private teachers inthe south of Henan Province have been closely observed by the writer through observation,interview and physical material collection etc. Then the information and data collected have beenanalyzed by means of life history analysis.This dissertation consists of four parts, and they are:PartI is the introduction, which expresses the reasons and the significance of this research,the forming of the issue, literature review and the definition of the core conception etc. Part IIconcerns the research design, which illustrates the overall procedure of t he research throughthree aspects: understanding of the method of teacher’s life history, the meaning andcharacteristics of the life history, life history and the appropriateness of this study, designateobject and process of study. Part III, telling the stories of the private teachers’ experiences ofeach period, analysis them from the perspective of life history, including special career andspecial teaching concept. Part IV, exposit the reflection and limitations of the researchers.
