Oral English plays a very important role on improving the students’ comprehensiveability of using language in the process of learning English. However, affected by thebondage of traditional teaching methods, English books are often used as the mainteaching material, so the teaching effects are influenced badly. With the development ofthe society and the improvement of the scientific techniques, the teaching conditions ofmany primary and secondary schools are improved in China. Foreign language teachingenvironment are dramatically changed by kinds of modern teaching means such asmulti-media teaching facilities, therefore the ways of Oral English teaching graduallypresents the diversification trend.More and more people have paid much attention to the method of using movieresources to improve Oral English, but there are less people to study the effect of usingmovies on Oral English, words remembering and translation in the high school Englishteaching. The author offers a brief introduction to the previous studies and the advantagesand disadvantages of these studies. According to these studies, the author describes theadvantages of the movies and points out the feasibility of teaching oral English throughmovie resources. English movies, if used properly, can create a relaxing and realenvironment for studying, promote the motivation of studying, and provide authenticlearning materials and so on. The study is based on the motivation theory and the contexttheory, using questionnaires and oral English tests to analyze the effects of teaching oralEnglish with movies.The author chose Senior One students as the subjects of the study. They wereseparated into experimental group and control group. The traditional English books wereused as the main language materials in the control group, while movies in theexperimental group. Before and after the experiment, all the students were checked bythe questionnaires and oral English tests. The questionnaire is for the investigation of thelearning motivation of the subjects and the test is for checking oral English level. At last, all the data are collected and processed by the software SPSS.The results show that students’ learning motivation has developed and oral Englishscore also has improved very much in the experimental group. It can be concluded thatmovies as learning material can motivate student to study English better. The movieshave more advantages, and students in experimental group make a greater progress thanthose in control group. Furthermore, the students in the experimental group also have aprofound understanding of western cultures, learning slang actively, learning westerners’thinking mind, and deeper awareness of pronunciation and intonation. Finally, the thesispoints out some limitations and gives some teaching suggestions for the further research.The study can provide some practical foundation for oral English teaching by usingmovies.
