In the process of reading instruction, different teachers may have different interpretations of the same text; therefore, the corresponding focuses, approaches as well as methods to be employed in the reading classroom will be varied. But the interpretation of the reading material is generally far from normal. What is actually focused on is no more than the two aspects:language points and information. So we began to do the action research on the interpretation of the reading material. Our classroom observations and our previous study on this topic reveal that interpretations of a text can be tried out from the following five perspectives:(1) Language knowledge;(2) Text genre;(3) Reading strategies;(4) Writing Skills; and (5) Cultural awareness and affective variables. For a year of observing and practicing the lessons, we have taken down four teaching cases on the different interpretation of the text, and gave a detailed analysis. All the teaching cases are from real classroom teaching.Also this essay puts out that if the teacher has a sufficient interpretation and analysis of the text, he will involve his thinking and his understanding of the reading material into his lesson. He can not only make his class instructive, but also make himself progressed. In fact, what we have done has a great influence on our English teachers in and out of the school, thus changing their teaching focus on the exercises and results of the tests to development of the teachers themselves and the students.This thesis is made up of five chapters. Chapter one is mainly about the significance, background and the research questions of the study as well as the overall of the thesis. Chapter two is literature review, which introduces "Reading and reading instruction""Espoused theory and theory-in-use","The interpretation of a text as a complex system of understanding","Helping students learn reading by going into the text","Action research:Teachers working as a community" and "Professional development". Chapter three introduces the Research Methodology of the study, which was started by observing daily practice in relation to the interpretation of the reading text in reading instruction of the writers’ colleagues in the same school as well as those citywide. Chapter four reveals data collection and data analysis. Chapter five presents major findings of the research, existing problems, implications for future study and limitations of the study.
