Based on the analysis of literature, we constructed a theoretical model of self-expression, and developed a preliminary scale of self-expression beliefs combined with depth interviews. After tested in the early stage and revised the theoretical model, the research formed a self-expression beliefs questionnaire for middle school students. By using this scale, we investigated the middle school students that in Changsha and Yueyang areas, explored the affect factors in self-expression of the middle school students. The results included:(1) Self-expression of middle school students include4dimensions, that were the self-expression of emotional, the self-expression of academic, the self-expression of physical and the self-expression of social. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the model of self-expression in beliefs of middle school students fitted well with the test data.(2) The beliefs of self-expression scale of middle school students had good reliability and validity.(3) In the-beliefs of self-expression, girls had significantly higher scores than boys;the scores of only-child students were significantly higher than non-only child students; the students that had good relationship with parents had significantly higher scores than the students that had general or bad relationship with parents; urban students had higher scores than rural students; the higher levels of education the parents had, the higher level of self-expression the middle school students had; The better family economic status was, the higher level of self-expression of the middle school students had. The development of the self-expression of emotional was instability, the second grade of middle school was the lowest point, the first grade of high school was the highest point; girls were significantly higher than boys in scores; the better economic conditions of family was, the higher level of the self-expression emotional was; family location and family economic status had interaction.The development of the self-expression of academic was instability, the first grade of middle school was the highest point, the second grade of middle school was the lowest point girls were significantly higher than boys in scores; one-child students had higher scores than non-only child students; the students had good relationship with parents was significantly higher in scores than the students had general or bad relationship with parents; urban students had higher scores than rural students; the higher levels of education the parents had, the higher level of self-expression the middle school students had.In the self-expression of physical, grade and gender had significantly interaction.In the self-expression of social, the differences between each grade were significant, third grade of middle school was higher than other grade in scores; the students in cities had higher scores than the county and rural students; with the raising of parents’education level, the overall score showed ascend trend;the better family economic status, the higher level of self-expression of social.
