Instructional Design is the core of Educational Technology research areas, which is the previous plan of practice. Instructional design is different from the practice and may be challenged by practice, which requires instructional design under the guidance of a certain model. Instructional design models vary from each other and each model is proposed with different learning theories. As traditional instructional design model is for the teaching of a particular aspect, it is not applicable for the ill-structured problem, the kind of open and holistic task, and complex learning under real-life situation. Holistic instructional design model is based on the solution of the problem mode.With the continuous development of the society, the social requirements for overall quality of talents are increasingly high. The acquisition of knowledge and skills is not decided by a single factor, but rather a complex process. Materialist dialectics also indicate that there are a wide variety of links and contradictions between things, so learning is a complex process, and this paper will focus on the complex learning, exploring the meaning of complex learning. There are theories containing the enlightenments for complex learning, and many researchers have conducted related researches. The paper summarized these researches and built new model combining the reality.With the methods of literature analysis, questionnaire, case study and experimental research, the paper reviewed the domestic and foreign research status of complex learning, instructional design models,4C/ID model, and defined complex learning from multiple levels. The paper analyzed cognitive flexibility theory, cognitive load theory,4C/ID model and their enlightenments on complex learning task design. After analyzing the drawbacks of traditional instructional design models, the paper described the features of holistic instructional design model of complex learning, and built a new model. Then the new model was applied in the course of Modern Educational Technology and verified by the experiments. The practices proved that this model is very useful for solving problems of complex learning under realistic situation, so as to the same kinds of learning task. The author hopes that the research helps readers have a comprehensive understanding of holistic instructional design models and the model would guide teaching and learning more effectively, which will be useful for promoting the transformation of instructional design, improving teaching effects and cultivating students’comprehensive abilities.The paper consists of six chapters, and the followings are the main content of each chapter:Chapter one is introduction. This chapter mainly introduced the research background, domestic and foreign research situation, research content and methods, and research objectives.Chapter two is the overview of related research foundation. Firstly, this chapter introduced complex learning from the aspects of three kinds of learning theories, then interpreted the meaning of complex learning combined with the actual research, and analyzed the basic theory of instructional design of complex learning.Chapter three is the construction and interpretation of the holistic instructional design model of complex learning. Firstly, this chapter described the drawbacks of traditional instructional design models, and introduced the features of the instructional design model of complex learning, then built the holistic instructional design model of complex learning according to the features.Chapter four is the case design of the holistic instructional design model of complex learning. This chapter selected the teaching content of the Modern Educational Technology course and designed the teaching case on the basis of detailed analysis.Chapter five is the experimental research of the case. This chapter applied the model in the actual course, and designed the experiment by setting up experimental group and control group, and collected the experimental data with the methods of interview, classroom observation and evaluation, and verified the application effects of the model.Chapter six is conclusion and outlook. This chapter concluded the innovation points and drawbacks of the paper, and put forward the future work of the research.
