Picture books are internationally recognized as the most suitable books for children to read since the twenty-first century. They have beautiful pictures and humorous stories, whose tenet is consistent with Guidelines for Kindergarten Education promulgated by China’s Ministry of Education in2001. It proposed "to guide children to contact with excellent children’s literary works......to inspire children’s interests in books by drawing, painting and other methods." These ideas are embodied on picture books, naturally, picture books are popular in kindergarten, and many teachers apply them in their daily teaching activities. Since the teaching of picture books is popular today, it is not difficult to find that many problems and puzzles exist in picture books teaching activities. This research used many methods such as questionnaire, interviews, live activities analysis and the action research to solve two problems:first, to investigate the present situation of picture books teaching at kindergarten, and to analyze its problems and reasons; second, on the basis of the investigation, try to improve teachers’understanding of picture books through training lectures, and improve teachers’class-designing abilities by action research.First of all, this study through a combination of methods of questionnaires, interviews and live activities analysis to surveyed the current situation of picture books teaching in kindergarten. The results showed that the kindergarten teachers mainly have the following problems in their teaching activities:1. teachers understanding about the concept of picture books and the differences between them and other types of children’s books need to be deepened;2. teachers’ abilities of selecting picture books need to be improved;3. teachers’understanding of teaching goal of picture books teaching are not consistent with their actions;4. teaching forms are stereotypical, simply make picture books teaching equal to story-telling;5. teachers ask too many questions and lots of them are ineffective;6. lack of necessary and effective extension activities.Secondly, in view of the problems found by the investigation, researcher gave training lectures to the kindergarten teachers in order to improve their understanding of picture books; then designed teaching activities in the social development field with kindergarten teachers together and helped teachers to solve problems in the process of action research. Through the observation and interviews, we can find that teachers who participated the action research got into a higher level of both concept understanding and teaching activities designing.Although this research has made some achievements, there are still some deficiencies and problems need to be solved, for example, the analysis of the preliminary investigation is not deep enough, action research program needs to be further improved and the sample size needs to expanded.
