Freshmen will be experiencing the transformation from high school to university, which meansto face a new life environment, fell the changes of learning, build new interpersonal relationships, participate in social activities and so on. These changes are more likely to cause psychologicalpressure, making Freshman’s psychological problem highlight. Previous studies on Freshmen’smental health status focus on the horizontal comparison, which is mainly based on the data ofFreshmen’s mental health survey. But lack of the research on the developmental trend of theFreshmen’s mental health status. This study, in the support of the data from16777Freshmen’smental health survey of Grade2006, Grade2008and Grade2010in a university in Zhejiangprovince, using archival analysis and the descriptive statistical method, compare Freshmen’s scoresfrom three grades on ten factors of symptom checklist (SCL-90), which are Somatization,Obsessive-compulsive Symptoms, Interpersonal Sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Hostility, Terror,Paranoia, Psychiatric and Others. Through discussions on the overall situation of Freshmen’s mentalhealth, outstanding psychological problems, the change trend of psychological problems fromdifferent grades Freshmen, and characteristics of mental problems from different gender Freshmen, get the following important conclusions:(1) In the view of the performance level of general psychological problems, using any factorscore≥2.5of SCL-90as the abnormal standard, we can be informed that, totally the detection rateof Freshmen’s abnormal psychology is respectively:14.6%,15.2%and10.8%, the detection rate ofabnormal psychology on every factor basically maintains in about10%. The students’ proportion ofmild symptoms (2.5≤any factor score<3.0) is significantly higher than that of moderate symptoms(3.0≤any factor score≤5.0), suggesting that Freshmen’s mental health is generally good, andFreshmen’s psychological problems are mainly mild symptoms.(2)In the perspective of different symptoms’ performance of psychological problems, rankingaccording to high or low scores of SCL-90ten factors, scores on Obsessive-compulsive Symptomsand Interpersonal Sensitivity are the highest, followed by Paranoia, Hostility and Depression, andthe lowest scores are Somatization and Psychosis, which suggests that Freshmen’s mainpsychological problems are Obsessive-compulsive Symptoms and Interpersonal Sensitivity, andtheir physiological health condition is good, with low students’ proportion in serious mental illness.(3) Viewed from the change trend of Freshmen’s mental health status in grade, abnormalpsychology’s detection rate of Overall mental status shows ascendant trend from the beginning of2008. The same trend is also reflected in the detection rate on three factors (Obsessive-compulsiveSymptoms, Interpersonal Sensitivity and Paranoia) of SCL-90. But the detection rate on otherfactors, such as Somatization, Hostility, Depression, Anxiety, Other, Psychotic, Terror and Somatization, do not change significantly.(4)For male and female gender characteristics of Freshmen’s mental health status, both maleand female Freshmen’s main psychological problems are embodied in Obsessive-compulsiveSymptoms and Interpersonal Sensitivity. In addition, male freshmen more obviously perform in theParanoid and Hostile factors, but female Freshmen’s psychological problems are more and more inDepression and Anxiety.According to the above research results, the author puts forward several measures to improvethe work of College Students’ mental health education: One is to strengthen popularizationeducation of mental health knowledge in Freshmen’s entrance education; The other focus oncultivating college students’ interpersonal skills, and encourage students to participate in variouscultural activities in campus to improve personal performance; The third is to establish and improveUniversity Students’ psychological crisis intervention system, and make sure that identify problemstimely, assess problems accurately, and interventions are effective.
