With the rapid development of world economy, we human beings areenjoying a different society with great material wealth. However, just as everycoin has two sides, the development of world economy has brought us withmany increasingly serious environmental problems. As the environmentalproblems are becoming more and more serious, many people are payingspecial attention to the education of environment. And now environmenteducation is considered as the best way to solve, protect and improve thepresent serious environmental problems, which is also very essential to thesustainable development of human society.Besides, it is a basic national policy of our country to strengthen theenvironmental education of primary and secondary schools. As we all known,high school education is the last important stage of China’s the basiceducation and the ability of high school graduates is very important to thedevelopment of our country. Therefore, it is urgent and necessary to carry outthe subject of environmental education. The subject of chemistry in highschool is closely related to environment, so it is reasonable and necessary toconduct and carry out the environmental education. According to thechemistry syllabus and curriculum for senior middle school, it is required thatthe students’ environment protection should be improved to keep up with thedevelopment of the society. So the author take the example of Wu Hai’senvironmental education and carry out this research to show some effectiveways of how to improve the high school students’ environmental awareness.The thesis is made up of six chapters. Chapter one begins with thebackground and significance of this study, states out the concept ofenvironment, environment problems and environment education and showsthe ways of conduct environment education and the necessity and possibility of carrying out environmental education in high school chemistry classes; Thesecond part presents the theoretical review, which is related to thedevelopment and present situation of environment education both at home andabroad. The third chapter is about the general description of the purpose of thedevelopment of high school students’ environmental literacy and awareness,its principles,(including the principle of regional focus, integrate theory withpractice, scientific principle, demonstrative principle and practical principle ofparticipation) and the methods of this study (including teaching method,material reading method, experimental method, role playing method, andenvironment investigation method).The fourth part is about the practicalresearch of improving the students’ environmental literacy by local resourceswith the new curriculum concept. The main content of this part consists of thenew chemistry curriculum concept, the general situation of the localenvironment resources of Wu Hai and the approaches of the study. The mainapproaches are the real environmental material, the infiltration ofenvironmental protection in class teaching, and the environmental educationby chemical experiment teaching, field visit to improve the students’environment awareness, out class activities to extend environmentalprotection teaching, the development of school-based curriculum to conductenvironmental protection, teaching with chemical exercises and making fulluse of special lectures. In chapter five, some cases about how to carry aboutenvironmental education in chemical class are introduced, such as theschool-based curriculum: how to deal with the waste battery and the enrichedchemical element in the sea water—chlorine, sulfur and nitrogen oxides. Thelast chapter is mainly about the reflection of this study.
