Nowadays many teachers still take the traditional approach to teaching Senior High School English Vocabulary, which means that they teach Senior High School English Vocabulary and reading material separately. They teach vocabulary first and explain the use of it, followed by a lot of exercises to make students to keep it in mind. In this approach, however, lots of time and energy for exercises and explanations are devoted to the process, which, however, contributes to poor result. So, learning Senior High School English Vocabulary, for some students, has resulted in their lack of confidence in studying English, and is also a big problem for teachers to face.What is the effective approach to teaching Senior High School English Vocabulary? The author analyzes the present situation of the Senior High School English Vocabulary teaching and problems exist in it. To get the best approach to teaching Senior High School English Vocabulary, the author illustrates a new teaching method-teaching Senior High School English Vocabulary through reading literary classics. Based on Krashen’s IH (The Input Hypothesis)、Wester’s reading approach、Lexico-semantic theory and Dual coding theory, etc, the paper proves that it’s practical and effective to teach Senior High School English Vocabulary through reading literary classics.In the process of the teaching, the author finds that, first, teaching Senior High School English Vocabulary through reading literary classics is suitable for a class of many students, and it will not be affected by the number of the students in the class. Second, Literary classics can supply English learners with large quantities of situations in which they can be motivated and learn English more actively rather than passively. Third, teaching Senior High School English Vocabulary through reading literary classics follows the cognitive rules. Only being exposed in the reading materials can students acquire vocabulary.In the last part of the paper, the author draws a conclusion that it is an effective way to teach Senior High School English Vocabulary through reading literary classics and illustrates the problems and notices in the teaching method.
