In china, task-based teaching approach has become one of the focuses of English readingteaching in recent years. Task-based approach is a kind of classroom activity regarding learning goals asguiding, viewing the learners as the center of studying. Many researches in domestic and foreign countriesprove that task-based teaching plays an important role in improving the students’ learning ability,cultivating the students’ interest in learning and cultivating the students’ comprehensive quality. In order tohelp the students learn English reading more effectively, the traditional reading teaching approach shouldbe changed. And teachers are also encouraged to use interactive and meaning tasks in class in Junior andSenior middle schools. In this paper it introduces the theories of reading teaching, reading models, task-based reading teaching and the application of the task-based approach in English reading teaching. Inaddition, it mainly discusses the present situation of research on task-based approach in China and abroad,the design principles of task-based approach and the basic model and then makes the organic integration oftheoretical research and teaching practice.In this article, I will prove the feasibility of task-based approach in China through teachingpractice, questionnaire, reading test and the test results between experimental class and comparative class.In order to confirm whether the task-based approach is effective, an experiment has beenemployed for about four months. Compared with the traditional teaching, the task-based teaching approachis more advantageous to improve students’ reading ability and integrated language skills. At the same time,compared with the traditional teaching approach, in this experiment it also proves that the task-basedapproach is more advantageous to help students overcome the fear of reading, stimulate students’ learninginitiative, make students relaxed and happy to learn, improve their reading speed and the ability of usinglanguage. With several former concerns stated, research questions are put forward in this study:1) Which teaching approach can improve students’ reading ability more effectively, traditionalteaching approach or task-based approach?2) What beneficial effects can students learn from task-based approach in the English reading?It is divided into five chapters in this paper. It introduces the research background and significance of the task-based English reading teachingin the first chapter.Chapter two introduces the related theory of reading and the research status of task-basedteaching both at home and abroad and the design principles of task-based approach and the basic models ofreading.The third chapter is the focus point of the article. It discusses the concrete implementation oftask-based approach in the English reaching teaching. The aim of the experiment is to prove the feasibilityof task-based English reading teaching in China through teaching practice, questionnaire, reading test andthe test results between experimental class and comparative class.The contents of chapter four are the data analysis, discussion and reflection of the experiment.The fifth chapter has concludes. Through teaching experiment for several months, I found thatthe reading ability of students in the experimental class has improved markedly and the score issignificantly higher than the students’ in the control class. Therefore, we may draw the conclusion that thetask-based reading teaching is active and effective to improve the students’ English reading ability.
